Thorsmork is a wild, mountainous area in southern Iceland that is inaccessible to normal road vehicles. Many people hike to the area, and spend several days appreciating the beauty and wilderness.
If you don’t have the time or ability to do this, you can join a day trip from Reykjavik. The tours use off-road jeeps or buses to navigate and cross glacial rivers, making getting there a big adventure in itself. After leaving the main ring road, the journey is on extremely rough tracks, and crossing the rivers can be exciting but quite scary. Of course this is what makes the trip so memorable!
The mountains around Thorsmork are extremely beautiful, many with icecaps. The infamous Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010 resulted in new lava flows into the area.
Many trips allow several hours free, so that you can explore some of the great footpaths in the area. There are paths to suit any ability, and the scenery all around is magnificent.
